After working in Information Technology (IT) roles for more than 20 years, I decided to transition to a different field – Learning and Development. While this was a big change for me, I was fortunate to find inspiration, support, and resources at Fisher Investments which helped me get out of my comfort zone and try something new! I am excited to share my story and what I learned during my journey.

Before coming to Fisher Investments, I worked in technology for some reputable companies in New York and gained expertise across a variety of IT-specific roles. I joined Fisher Investments in 2012 as an IT Service Desk Associate. As my skills and experience grew, I moved into other roles including System Engineer Associate, Infrastructure Operations Associate, Help Desk Supervisor, and System Engineer. What I enjoyed most about working in Technology was mentoring individuals and seeing them grow and advance in their careers – this sparked my interest in Learning and Development.

My career transition started with my co-workers and managers. I was fortunate to receive support from caring colleagues that challenged me daily to be the best version of myself. As my interest in Learning and Development grew, I discussed with my manager that I was ready to shift my focus and begin applying for roles that directly supported employees in their growth and development. My manager was my biggest advocate.

When I started my career change from Technology to Learning and Development, I took note of all the support that is available at Fisher.  It’s common to hear “Fisher builds lifelong careers” which inspires employees to find what they are truly passionate about. I set up meetings to learn about new roles across the firm and got to network with talented people to understand what made them successful.

Fisher offers amazing career development resources which empowers employees to take the next step in their career journey. These resources include on-demand classes via our online learning portal and role specific programs to help individuals explore their options and improve their skills, including Internal Talent Advising, Information Sessions, Bridge Programs and Job Shadowing to name a few.

After moving through Fisher’s internal interview process, I earned a new role as a Corporate Learning and Development Specialist, where I get to create training documentation and facilitate global trainings for both new and existing employees. In my role, I feel I can make a global impact and show Fisher employees that we care about their growth.

During my career transition, I found helpful colleagues who cared about my growth and stretched me as an individual. I learned the importance of expressing my interest in a new career path and taking steps to develop and explore the opportunities available. For others who are interested in a career change, I share this advice:

  • Continuously work on being the best version of yourself.
  • Get out of your comfort zone and try something new.
  • Take advantage of the opportunities available to grow your career.
  • Follow your passion.
  • Do not be afraid to get creative, have difficult conversations, and advocate for your goals.
